Auroral eavesdropping

25/02/2023

Today's early morning thoughts (before the first cup of coffee) were about nature and nature - the usual sort of auroral ideas that float around. My time-honoured and evasive response to this is socially and physically systemic - the organism is affected by its habitat, and that the habitat operates on an organism. But that led to thoughts of determinism - an issue that I always thought to be rather arcane - the complexity of the universe being such that all relevant causes could never be identified. Statistics suggests (do Americans talk about Statistic?) that there are predictable patterns within a large scale randomness. So that in turn led on to thinking about randomness. We know that randomness is pretty important for our modern electronic financial well-being - but is randomness actually merely a problem of our limited perception. According to Ramsey and Wikipedia pure randomness is impossible.According to Motzkin complete disorder is impossible (he hadn't seen my office). If so then there is a case for determinism. A simple example: I think I have randomly woken to such thoughts when in fact, as I was waking, Melvyn Bragg and his select academics were talking to the radio audience about Paul Erdos, and Alexa was feeding it into my waking consciousness.
